Forum Program

Day Two • Tuesday, 18 September 2001 • The Genesis of Innovation

The Forum's first full day of Plenary Sessions will deal with the process of innovation as seen from a variety of perspectives: Academic, Industrial, Non-profit, Scientific and Entrepreneurial. The "drivers" of these constituencies will be explored as the personal experiences of the main speakers become the starting point for the creation of a more generalized view of how the various groups approach the problems of creativity; and how ultimately they may work together to create new world views and new understandings of scientific phenomena. The goal of this session will be to work to resolve conflicts that have already arisen between different industry sectors as a result of their varying viewpoints on how innovation is fostered from the laboratory to its introduction into global society. The Plenary Sessions will also explore the more practical matters associated with discovery in individual fields from genetics to capital markets and academia to information technology.

It is the Forum's view that it is impossible to separate out the components of the discovery and innovation continuum. Each session will therefore cover not only the pure intellectual content of its subject, but also the social, economic, and political milieus in which they are operating.
