Day Three • Wednesday, 19 September 2001 • The Social Implications of Healthcare Innovation

The morning Plenary Meeting on Day Three of the Forum will take a comparative approach to the healthcare debate by examining the many paradigms, both governmental and industrial, of innovation and its uses worldwide.

Many models have been tried and implemented. On a scientific level, conventional wisdom has propagated the notion that, in general, human disease and its effects are the same from society to society. The resulting usage and development of innovative healthcare technologies has followed this same line.

In the afternoon, the Main Speakers and panel will look in more detail at the specific relationships currently determining the global introduction of new technologies.

During both morning and afternoon, the Main Speakers at the Plenary will examine the social implications of innovation from several different perspectives in order to answer the following core questions:

Is there one best way forward for dealing with illness worldwide, or does each society have to find its own system and paradigm of healthcare and healthcare delivery and innovation?

What are the ethical issues involved in the paradigm choice from society to society? Can the role of the marketplace, whether public or private, be denied in the matter of choice?

It is the view of the Forum, that only through this type of open, honest, and direct communication can a new and beneficial paradigm of healthcare be discovered.
