Conceptual Framework

From 24 to 26 March the Global Medical Forum Foundation met at the Centre for Global Dialogue in Zurich; with over 70 presentations by world leaders in healthcare and medicine, the meeting presented a unique overview of the present and future of healthcare worldwide; the meeting brought people and ideas together.

GMF II highlighted the advances of 2002 and early 2003 and integrated them into a model of the future direction or paradigm of healthcare. The pace of discovery and innovation is increasing steadily. At the same time the social and political issues surrounding healthcare and its provision are also mounting. To harmonize these trends is one on the overriding goals of the Global Medical Forum Foundation.

GMF II sought to demonstrate a convergence of interest in the development of new technologies, new therapeutic agents, new protocols of treatments, new models and understandings of outcome analyses, new provisions of insurance, and new prevention of disease - all based on a better understanding of what future direction healthcare will take. Key questions that were explored include the following:

How can universities and corporations create an acceptable model for higher productivity and ever more innovative and collaborative research?

What is the future model for the financing of healthcare: Cost and treatment, insurance and patient?

What is the most effective model for public-private partnership in healthcare?

How do new technologies affect basic research?

Will the patient evolve into an informed consumer or continue to be patient? What is the role of Information technology (IT) in this process?

Will active philanthropic institutions become the fourth estate of healthcare?

The Board of the Foundation believes that this march of progress and convergence is not to be halted and that only by working rationally, honestly, and forthrightly can all those involved in the physical and social sciences of healthcare truly serve their enlarging global constituencies.

  GMF II Speeches

Few businesses are as complex as is healthcare. Whatever is done in healthcare impacts the public sector, the private sector and society at large. In order to be engaged in healthcare in a productive fashion, it is therefore necessary to understand that there is "Convergence" in all interests to work together to find a positive way forward in the healthcare debate. The GMF II speeches examine this issue of convergence from every angle within the healthcare debate.
