Conceptual
Framework

GMF II sought to demonstrate a convergence of interest
in the development of new technologies, new therapeutic agents, new protocols
of treatments, new models and understandings of outcome analyses, new
provisions of insurance, and new prevention of disease - all based on
a better understanding of what future direction healthcare will take.
Key questions that were explored include the following:
How
can universities and corporations create an acceptable model for higher
productivity and ever more innovative and collaborative research?
What
is the future model for the financing of healthcare: Cost and treatment,
insurance and patient?
What
is the most effective model for public-private partnership in healthcare?
How
do new technologies affect basic research?
Will
the patient evolve into an informed consumer or continue to be patient?
What is the role of Information technology (IT) in this process?
Will
active philanthropic institutions become the fourth estate of healthcare?

The Board of the Foundation believes that this march
of progress and convergence is not to be halted and that only by working
rationally, honestly, and forthrightly can all those involved in the physical
and social sciences of healthcare truly serve their enlarging global constituencies.
