Globalization and Healthcare

Plenary Session & Closing Debate: Healthcare Challenges, Systems & Leaders of the Future

The last plenary session of GMF II will examine the realities of current medical innovation: What is the future direction of medical innovation in its two most prolific regions of origin, Europe and North America? Are there successful existing and well-planned future
methods for exporting this innovation to the rest of the world? What is the role of the public sector in regulating that export/import?

World leaders from each of the major healthcare constituencies will attempt to answer these questions while paving the way for
the closing debate, which is devoted to the healthcare leaders of the future.

Each of the members of the closing debate will make a session presentation dedicated to a different aspect of healthcare leadership in
the future; real time polling devices will be used to measure the audiences judgment of key questions from the debate.

As Karl Popper made clear, the essential act of the scientist is the repudiation of falsehood. Similarly, the true leader in healthcare
will repudiate what is false in the society at large in order that the necessary resources can be mobilized to make healthcare and
medical innovation an ongoing reality. From this perspective, medical innovation, both scientific and social, creates truth in that
it dispels from the world the disruptions of disease and corruption.

The healthcare leaders of the future are those who can realize this ideal and decipher the mysteries of nature towards this aim,
thereby pointing a positive way forward for society as a whole.

This combination of deciphering and leading is the essence of convergence in healthcare. It is the ultimate marriage of knowledge,
cooperation and scientific truth. The closing debate will summarize the GMF II discussions under the umbrella of this specific
species of convergence, thereby pointing the way forwards to GMF III and beyond.
