GMF V Introduction

In a world of mobile capital and repetitive corporate relocation, governments and regulators today struggle to attract, build and maintain effective and profitable biomedical and healthcare clusters. At the same time, corporations actively seek out those regulatory environments in which they can maximize innovation and profitability and minimize conflict with regulatory authorities. A balance is therefore sought by both parties, whereby profitability is maintained, innovation stimulated and society supported by the derivative excellent healthcare of a successful medical sector.

GMF V, to take place in October 2007, will examine this complex interplay from the many different perspectives of each of the participants in the healthcare continuum in the search for applicable solutions to current imbalances. Key questions and topics to be addressed include:

On research. . .

  • Is there a link between reference pricing and the relocation of research capacity?
  • Where will pharma and biotech innovation take place in the coming two decades?
  • Will India and China become new frontiers in medical research?
  • How can societies regulate off-label drug use?
  • Can the NIH model be transposed to other societies around the world?
  • What is the long-term effect of current FDA policies and guidelines on innovation in medicine?
  • How does a regulatory body moniter drugs over the long term?
  • Does the United States need a stricter medical technology evaluation process?
  • How can Europe create a better environment for research?
  • How will personalized medicine affect regulatory constraints?

On coverage. . .

  • How can a government protect solidarity during the transition to a free market?
  • How does over-regulation affect cost?
  • What is the proper role of global institutions in healthcare development in low-income countries?
  • Case studies from the history of healthcare regulation: Successes and failures
  • The great Medicare experiment: Can public-private joint ventures succeed in developed economies?
  • How can a regulatory body support consumer driven healthcare?

On institutions....

  • What is the prognosis for the state-owned university research hospital?
  • Healthcare developments in the unregulated markets of the Middle East: Pitfalls and successes
  • How does a region build a medical cluster: Tax structures, real estate laws, medical regulation
  • Does the global press understand the complexity of healthcare and regulation?
  • Hospital development in China: The state of play
