The GMF Summit: Abu Dhabi is in many ways an exploration of the complex challenges that face any rapidly developing healthcare system. It is a search for solutions to those challenges and for the proper balance in the many tradeoffs that are inevitably encountered. At the core of this effort is the concept of excellence, a concept which the Foundation believes must always remain as the watermark of the healthcare agenda. There should be no goal to create second class healthcare, even if there are to remain established systems of patient export and tiered classes of medicine. A society which does not recognize the centrality of excellence is one which will only compound the myths of healthcare and inevitably harm its system of care. Excellence, at least in the short term, may not be possible in every field, yet it is the duty of the society’s leaders to strive for its achievement. This Opening Plenary will seek to define the concept of excellence in the context of the region. |
